Spinal Cord Injury Program

|
Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital is 90-bed rehabilitation hospital accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The hospital has been awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for the following programs:
The Spinal Cord Injury Program at Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital provides specialized care to individuals who have sustained spinal cord injuries or have spinal cord disease. Injuries or diseases of this nature may result in significant physical deficits as well as problems with psychosocial functioning and possible cognitive impairment. The program offers specialized evaluation and treatment for patients who have sustained injury/trauma to the spinal cord. The therapeutic objectives for the Spinal Cord Injury Program include: - Returning patients to their family, community, and employers as productive individuals - Teaching patients and families how to compensate for functional limitations - Restoring and developing leisure activities
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT Pinecrest believes that family involvement is important to a successful rehabilitation program. Family members are given opportunities to learn about spinal cord injury and its effects and are encouraged to take part in family conferences. Families can learn when and how to help the patient, when not to help, and how to offer constructive support.
COMMUNITY RE-INTEGRATION We believe that planned integration into the community must be an integral part of the complete rehabilitation process. Practice outside the hospital setting gives the patient the opportunity to carryover therapeutic techniques learned in the hospital. Realization that skills learned within the hospital are applicable to daily life outside of the hospital gives credibility to the rehabilitation process. In the Spinal Cord Injury Program, we provide patients with the opportunity and experiences within the community to develop and apply new therapeutic skills for participation in daily community living. Community re-entry training involves assisting the patient in planning an outing, addressing the adaptations needed for going into the community, and the actual practice with wheelchair mobility, transportation, architectural barriers and improving social and self-esteem skills while in the community.
PATIENT AND FAMILY SUPPORT Patients and families are provided with psychological support and education regarding spinal cord recovery and adjustment issues such as altered life circumstances, relationship issues, social and work/school concerns.
